Garena Free Fire is a famous esport. Its player base is so huge that it rivals that of some of the world’s best-established esports, such as League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
If you want to master Free Fire, you’re embarking on a long journey. The game can be learned quickly but reaching a high Free Fire rank takes years.
What Is Free Fire and How It Works
Free Fire was released in December 2017 by 111dots Studio. This is a mobile game designed primarily for Android, iOS, and iPadOS.
Free Fire looks and feels a lot like Fortnite. The game belongs to the Battle Royale genre and is well-suited for those who love a fast-paced battle in which the goal is to eliminate as many opponents as possible while not getting killed yourself.
The action takes place on a fairly small map and revolves around guns and armor. If you obtain good guns and know how to use them, you can easily kill other players and further increase your power.
The initial battles are always generated by the need to be the first who enters a house and pick up the equipment located there.
Obviously, you won’t be the only one who wants to get his hands on a great weapon, so you will probably need to fight someone on your way to it.
The game rewards proactive behavior and encourages players to try to get kills. But that’s not always the optimal strategy. There are situations where you need to know how to stay hidden and allow the other players to eliminate each other.
Why You Might Want to Get Good at Free Fire
Free Fire is played by millions of people. Its biggest tournaments offer a few million dollars in prize money and the esports scene of this game is likely to grow considerably over the next five years.
In 2022, Free Fire World Series Sentosa and Bangkok offered around $1.8 million. The tournaments were won by Attack All Around and EVOS Phoenix.
These events were organized for teams of four players and featured eight Play-In rounds followed by another eight Finals rounds.
Another reason why you might want to master Free Fire is to have more fun when playing with friends.

All Ranks in Free Fire
Your FF rank is dictated by how successful you are on average. You’ll do well in some games and poorly in other games. But overall, if you play well, you will rank up.
Free Fire Ranks are similar to those in other esports. A new player starts in Bronze I and can work his way up to Grand Master. Reaching that level is quite difficult because there are millions of players and only the top 300 in each region receive it.
However, even if you don’t become an FF Grand Master, you can become a Heroic player or at least a Diamond. Here are all the Free Fire ranks that you can attain:

For the first two ranks, there are three subranks that you can reach: I, II, and III. The next three ranks have four subranks, and the final two have none.
When you enter a ranked match, you need to “pay” an entrance fee or stake some of your ranked points. To earn rank points at the end of the match, you need to stay alive for long enough to reach at least a 0 balance.
You generally start with a negative RP score and then slowly move toward a positive one.
The game can be played both ranked and unranked. And you can play it solo, in a duo, or with a full team of four players.
There are three maps that you should master: Bermuda, Alpine, and Purgatory. The more RP you get, the higher your rank will be.
How to Attain the Highest Rank in Free Fire
To reach a top rank in Free Fire, you need to work on your skills. There are at least five things that you can do to become a better Free Fire player:
Improve Your Attitude
When you play Free Fire with the objective of reaching the Grand Master rank, the first thing you need to work on is your attitude.
If you get angry after every loss, you will inevitably give up at some point. The process of becoming highly skilled involves a lot of mistakes and failures.
Most players don’t succeed in climbing the ladder because they assume that they are better than their current rank. The key is to do the opposite. Be mindful of your own weaknesses and work on removing them from your gameplay.
Learn How to Aim
Free Fire has all kinds of cool weapons that you can use but they’re not very effective unless you learn how to use them properly.
Some guns are good from a long distance, which is extremely valuable in this game. Others are effective at close range.
Every gun needs to be mastered. Set challenges for yourself to play the game using some guns more than others, so that you may learn them faster.
If you can, watch some tutorials about aiming and shooting. They will help you to become aware of what you’re doing wrong and how each gun works.
Learn to Position Yourself Correctly

Ideally, you should not be able to get killed by being shot from behind. In Free Fire, the goal is to have your back secured and then look for opportunities to kill players who are running around without properly clearing corners.
Learn to Be Patient
Free Fire is a lot like poker. You cannot win in every situation. Instead, you need to learn how to be patient and wait for the right moment to strike. Always take risks into account and don’t risk more than you have to.
If there are 20 players left and you are in a very comfortable position, let at least 10 or 15 of them get killed before you make your next big move. There is no point in fighting all the time.
The game will incentivize you to fight, but the goal is not to fight all the time. It is to finish the game as high as possible in the rankings.
Ideally, you want to win. It feels really good to be the best out of 50 participants. But that’s quite difficult to accomplish. A more realistic goal would be to finish the majority of your games in the top 10.
That can be done quite easily if you know how to find the right balance between taking risks and playing safely.

Whenever you play first-person shooters, one of the biggest elements you need to master is the map pool.
If you play on a terrain that you do not understand, you’ll most likely fail. This is even more so if the other players know exactly what they can do and how to utilize every single object to their advantage.
Develop your strategies based on what the map allows you to do and have at least several plans of action. The most important variables that influence your success rate are:
- Map location
- Equipment
- Your ability to use that equipment
- How many players are left
If you’re in a good location, well equipped, and also know how to utilize that equipment well, it will be really difficult for your opponents to kill you.
In the early game, you’re generally more vulnerable and the risk of dying in the first 5-10 minutes is high.
But if you plan ahead and develop a clear strategy for how you’re going to avoid being eliminated, it’s not that complicated to survive long enough to score points.
