The Elden Ring crossplay update is something a large part of the gaming community has been waiting on, anxiously. While the single-player campaign with its unkillable bosses and vast quantities of AOE damage has thrusted the game in contention for multiple awards, the multiplayer mode could use some work.
While the best Warzone players are free to team up with their homies on any of the best free crossplay games, Elden Ring is a different story. Here’s how far the Elden Ring cross platform integration has progressed, and what we can expect in the near future.
Is Elden Ring Cross Platform 2024?
The short answer is yes, but unfortunately, Elden Ring cross platform integration is only partial. While the title does offer cross platform support between specific platform combinations, the complete crossplay experience is still missing.
Elden Ring, the highly acclaimed game developed by FromSoftware, does not currently support crossplay functionality between PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
Elden Ring Cross Gen Play Explained
The Elden Ring cross platform integration only incorporates devices using the same hardware platform. Some of you might know this as cross gen support. For instance, any users of Sony devices like the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, can team up and play against each other on Elden Ring.
The backward compatibility feature enables older consoles to run titles that were universally recognized as the best release in 2022. However, the Elden Ring crossplay function is notably missing. Similarly, someone that owns an Xbox One can play Elden Ring cross platform with other Xbox users who own an Xbox Series X/S.
Likewise, PC players that have hardware using the Windows operating system, can team up against all other Windows PC players. But without Elden Ring crossplay enabled, these pools of players can never mix.
Is Elden Ring Crossplay Compatible 2024
Unfortunately, Elden Ring crossplay is still not a thing. While Elden Ring cross platform coverage allows you to enter multiplayer servers with other players, these are bound to your platform. If you’re looking to play some Elden Ring with your friends, you must all be on the same platform. As we mentioned, Elden Ring cross platform integration only supports cross-generation play.
Why Isn’t Elden Ring Crossplay?
The reason Elden Ring crossplay wasn’t implemented with the release of the title is most likely the increase in costs. If you’ve played any other title that FromSoft have developed, you would know that they’ve never done it. So in their eyes, why would Elden Ring crossplay be a priority?
A major feature like that takes a lot of time to be properly optimized and implemented. At the same time, somebody needs to do it, and that requires a bigger budget. Considering how expansive this title is, implementing Elden Ring crossplay becomes a daunting task.
On the other hand, Elden Ring doesn’t really need a crossplay feature. While there are many paid crossplay games that you can try out with your friends, Elden Ring is different. By design, most of the effort put into Elden Ring has been into the single player campaign.
While it is great to have a multiplayer function, it’s evident the developers and game designers have a thing for challenging enemy encounters. Bosses who are tough to beat and a lot of possible outcomes make it interesting. Elden Ring is a game that rarely becomes boring as a solo player.
Is Elden Ring Crossplay PS4 and PS5
Yes, Elden Ring crossplay between PS4 and PS5 is enabled. With cross gen support enabled, PS4 and PS5 users can team up to enjoy the Elden Ring multiplayer together. Those are the only 2 generations of Sony consoles that Elden Ring has a version for.
While there is no Elden Ring crossplay enabled, the cross platform integration exists for devices on the same platform. Since Sony is behind all of the PlayStation consoles and they function in the same manner, you can run Elden Ring on both consoles.
Is Elden Ring Crossplay PS4 and PC
As of 2024,Elden Ring cross platform play between PCs and PlayStation 4 consoles is not supported. Although you can play the game on both platforms, the pools of players can never mix in a multiplayer setting. Despite Elden Ring being capped at 60 hz and no competitive advantage being gained when using a keyboard, PC, and console players aren’t allowed to play on the same multiplayer servers.
While we’ve recently seen a spike in cross platform compatibility updates in recent years, the developers of Elden Ring are yet to implement this feature. Maybe 7 Days to Die would be a worthy replacement.
Is Elden Ring Crossplay PS5 and PC
Likewise, Elden Ring cross platform play between PCs and PlayStation 5 consoles is not supported. While PS5 owners have access to much newer and more powerful hardware that can match the computing capabilities of a PC, these pools of players can’t face each other on the same multiplayer servers.
That’s because Elden Ring crossplay is still not a thing. While PS5 owners can hit the multiplayer servers against other Elden Ring players using Sony hardware, this can never be the case with PC users with a Windows operating system.
Is Elden Ring Crossplay Xbox and PC
Similarly, Elden Ring cross platform play between PCs and Xbox consoles is not supported. Just like in the case of Sony’s PlayStation consoles, Microsoft’s Xbox consoles run a separate version of Elden Ring. Which shouldn’t be a problem when you’re climbing the Apex ranks, since it’s a full crossplay title.
With crossplay still not being implemented, it’s impossible for PC players to match up with or against Xbox users. Every platform has its unique version of the game it’s running. And the lack of an Elden ring crossplay feature prevents the pools of players mixing in the multiplayer servers.
Is Elden Ring Crossplay Xbox Series X
Yes, Elden Ring crossplay between Xbox Series X consoles is enabled. With cross gen support enabled, Series X and Series S users can team up to enjoy the Elden Ring multiplayer together. Those 2 consoles are the latest generation hardware devices that Microsoft has released, and it’s the same Elden Ring version running on both of them.
While there is no Elden Ring crossplay enabled, the cross platform integration exists for devices on the same platform. Since Microsoft is behind all of the Xbox consoles and they function in the same manner, you can run Elden Ring on both consoles.
Is Elden Ring Crossplay Xbox One
Likewise, Elden Ring crossplay between Xbox One and all other Xbox consoles is enabled. Due to cross gen support being a thing in Elden Ring, all Xbox users can team up on the same version of the Elden Ring multiplayer.
While Xbox consoles older than the Xbox One can’t even theoretically run Elden Ring, all other Xbox consoles are included in the cross gen update. This means that all Xbox One, Xbox Series S and Series X users can all team up in multiplayer servers.
Does Elden Ring Allow cross-progression?
Yes, as of 2024, Elden Ring offers cross-progression support across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. This feature allows players to seamlessly synchronize their progress between different devices if they are on the same platform.
Thus enabling them to transition between different generations of consoles without losing their game settings or achievements. This functionality proves invaluable for players facing Elden Ring’s challenging gameplay, where numerous powerful enemies and ambushes can swiftly halt progress.
Given the game’s difficulty level, maintaining progress becomes crucial, making cross-progression a highly appreciated feature.
Cross-progression is particularly beneficial for gamers who started their Elden Ring journey on the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One and later upgraded to PlayStation 5, or the Xbox Series X|S. With this feature, players within the same platform family can transfer their saved games and continue their gameplay experience seamlessly.
This flexibility not only enhances the gaming experience but also allows players to engage with others in the Elden Ring community while maintaining their progress across different platforms.
How Elden Ring Multiplayer Works
Elden Ring provides an exciting multiplayer experience similar to the previous titles of the publishers. While the absence of crossplay is a disappointment, the game offers both Co-op and PvP arenas for players.
In Co-op mode, players can collaborate to overcome complex quests and defeat formidable bosses, making challenging tasks more manageable. Additionally, Elden Ring introduces PvP arenas, where players engage in competitive combat against each other, enhancing the game’s overall multiplayer experience.
Unlike Dark Souls games, Elden Ring’s multiplayer setup doesn’t require specific prerequisites, which makes the process simpler. Players can be summoned by leaving in-game signs, enabling interaction between users.
The introduction of consumables in Elden Ring, replacing requirements like Humanity or Embers from previous titles, further streamlines the multiplayer experience. To activate Co-op in an area, players interact with the Effigy of the Martyr, a statue commonly found near Sites of Grace.
What is Elden Ring?
Elden Ring wasn’t in contention for multiple Game of the Year awards in 2022 for no reason. The action role-playing game which was released in February 2022, became an instant hit. It was developed by FromSoftware and directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, both of whom have experience in creating critically acclaimed pieces of intellectual property.
Embarking on a quest to repair the Elden Ring and become the new Elden Lord is where the fun starts. But as always, it’s about the journey, not about the result. Elden Ring successfully incorporates elements from FromSoftware’s previous titles.
Most notably, the challenging combat and exploration experience seen in the Dark Souls series makes an appearance, alongside other elements from Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
The game is set in a third-person perspective and features a vast open world known as the Lands Between. The map comprises of six main areas in which players assume the role of a character which is customizable.
In this expansive world, players can freely explore in order to obtain materials, utilizing various weapons that can be crafted, magic spells, and stealth mechanics. Checkpoints facilitate faster travel and allow players to enhance their attributes using Runes, the in-game currency.
Apart from the impressively expansive single player campaign, Elden Ring also has an online multiplayer. This enables cooperative play and PvP combat, which many find rather amusing. Game progress is based on crafting mechanics, with items crafted from materials found throughout the world. Players can collect recipes from cookbooks and acquire materials by defeating enemies, exploring, or trading with NPCs.
Elden Ring Awards and Sales
Elden Ring was a significant success. Selling 13.4 million copies worldwide by March 2022 and reaching 20 million copies sold by February 2023. The title’s difficulty level, a hallmark of FromSoftware games made it the fastest-selling game ever published by Bandai Namco.
It achieved top-selling status in multiple regions including the US, where it was the second-bestselling game of 2022 after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. The release garnered a lot of attention, with reviewers praising its challenging nature.
Elden Ring’s critical acclaim and commercial success solidified its place as a prominent entry in the action RPG genre. Captivating players with its challenging gameplay and expansive open world.
