Knowing the extent of Apex Legends cross platform capabilities is really important when trying to climb the Apex ranked system. Some of your teammates might just be getting used to a controller, which will impact their performance.
Just like many of the best free crossplay games on the market that have a multiplayer mode, properly optimizing your setup with Apex Pro settings goes a long way. So if you’re in that situation, make sure you check out our guide. If not, let’s break down how Apex Legends crossplay works!
Is Apex Cross Platform?
Yes, Apex Legends is a cross platform title. It’s hard to become one of the most popular battle royale entries in the gaming community without having proper platform coverage. As of early 2024, Apex Legends is one of the most widespread games on the market.
Apex Legends cross platform integration covers current and old generations consoles. This includes the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 from Sony, as well as the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S from Microsoft.
Two years after its initial release, Respawn Entertainment also published a PC version of
Apex Legends, for Windows specifically. This PC release came a year after the title made its way to the Nintendo Switch console. And in May 2022, Apex Legends Mobile also made its premiere, with coverage for both iOS and Android devices.
Is Apex Legends Crossplay?
Yes, as of October 2020, Apex Legends crossplay is fully enabled. This means that players using various platforms can team up and match up against each other, on the same servers. This was a major step towards making Apex Legends the giant that it is today. In a similar mold to Fortnite, Apex Legends is contesting the battle royale genre.
With Apex Legends Season 19 rolling around recently, there’s plenty of new content to try out. Apart from the Revenant rework that affects the Legend’s abilities kit, there are also numerous weapon buffs. Now, let’s see how you can add your friends to take full advantage of the Apex Legends cross platform integration.
How to Add Friends on Apex Legends Cross Platform?
By default, Apex Legends crossplay should be enabled on any platform that you are using. You can also turn off this feature, which is something we’ll discuss later on. But for now, let’s uncover how you can invite your Apex Legends cross platform friend to a single lobby.
In order to find your friends in Apex Legends on any platform, you will need to properly browse your Friends list. You can do this by selecting the Find Friend option in the Friends menu. This enables your search to cover players and usernames on different platforms through their identification.
There are a few ways your friends can identify your Apex Legends account and invite you to crossplay servers. These options are as follows:
- Email address
- PSN Online ID for PlayStation 4 and 5
- Xbox Live gamertag for Xbox One and X|S
- Nintendo Nickname for Nintendo Switch
- Steam Account name
Now, let’s take a look at the step by step process of creating your Apex Legends crossplay lobby:
- Boot up the game and log in to Apex Legends.
- When you’re on the main lobby screen, open the Friends menu.
- Here you’ll need to click the Find Friend option.
- Make sure to enter the player’s in-game username on the pop up and do a search.
- Select the right profile from the available options that fit the criteria in the drop-down menu to add them.
Keep in mind that the game will automatically look for any player matching that name on any system. Meaning that you will have to select the username that matches the platform that they are playing on.
How to Disable Apex Legends Crossplay
Now, if you want to disable Apex Legends crossplay, there’s also a way. Only a small portion of all CoD games have had crossplay enabled. And like many of the best Warzone players, even that player base prefers to turn off crossplay.
Some players take the game more seriously and want to achieve better results in ranked queues. And many of them have a platform they prefer using. This means they also prefer their teammates and opponents also use that platform, to preserve competitive integrity.
We already discussed this situation in our Rainbow Six Siege crossplay guide. And the reasoning for this is similar. Playing a fast paced FPS title on a controller is not the same when facing mouse and keyboard users. From aiming and movement to response times, it’s a different ball game.
So let’s figure out how to disable Apex Legends cross platform integration.
- First, you’ll want to head to the Game Menu, while you’re in a Lobby.
- Select the Settings option.
- Towards the bottom of the list, you’ll see Cross Platform Play option.
- Change the setting to Disabled.
Keep in mind that this will drastically reduce the player pool you can queue up with. Depending on your rank, region, and what time of the day you’re queueing up, this can increase your queue times by a lot.
Apex Legends Cross Progression
Unfortunately, as of 2024, Apex Legends does not support cross progression. While having Apex Legends cross platform capabilities is a great change, Respawn Entertainment are yet to implement cross progression.
This means that you can’t use your Apex Legends account on all platforms, thus preventing you from transferring progress and in-game commodities. PlayStation accounts are bound to other Sony hardware, meaning you can only use them on a PS4 and PS5.
Likewise, the same stands for Xbox consoles and Apex Legends Mobile accounts. On the flip side, PC users and Nintendo Switch users can use the same account on different platforms. But that’s only because their accounts are bound to the Steam platform.
Apex Legends Cross Progression PS4 to PC
As we mentioned, Apex Legends cross progression between PS4 consoles and PC accounts is not available. While both these player pools can team up or face each other thanks to the Apex Legends cross platform option, they can never share accounts.
If you’re playing Apex Legends from the early days on your PS4 console, your account progress can’t be transferred to a PC account. Your best option is to purchase a PS5 console in order to continue using your account. Otherwise, you would have to create a new PC account, rendering all your previous hard work useless.
Apex Legends Platforms
Having full Apex Legends cross platform compatibility goes a long way towards making a title more popular. That’s something most of the best paid crossplay games like Elden Ring and Dead by Daylight have had to learn the hard way.
Apex Legends Crossplay PC PS4
Yes, Apex Legends crossplay between PCs and PS4 console users is enabled. Since the game was initially introduced to these 2 platforms, they hold the biggest player bases. Since the October 2020 Apex Legends crossplay update, these two communities have been united.
The same goes for newer generation consoles developed by Sony like the PlayStation 5. Both of these Sony consoles can run Apex Legends. And since crossplay is enabled, you can team up with other PC users on the other end.
Apex Legends Crossplay PC Xbox
Similarly, Apex Legends crossplay between PCs and Xbox console users is enabled. Since the game was initially introduced to the Xbox One, it still holds some of the highest player counts. Since the October 2020 Apex Legends crossplay update, the Xbox community has been united with PC users.
This rings true for both old and newer generation consoles developed by Microsoft like the Xbox Series X|S. Both of these consoles can run Apex Legends, and since crossplay is enabled, you can team up with other PC users on the other end.
Is Apex Legends Cross Platform PS4 Xbox?
Likewise, Apex Legends cross platform integration between PlayStation and Xbox console users is enabled. Despite being some of the biggest rivals in the gaming hardware market, Respawn Entertainment have united both player bases in their title.
Which makes sense from both a financial and competitive standpoint, as both consoles function in the same manner. Using AOE abilities on both consoles are registered similarly on the servers.
Is Apex Legends Mobile Cross Platform?
While Apex Legends Mobile is cross platform by being available to both iOS and Android users at the same time, it’s not crossplay compatible. That’s because Apex Mobile is a completely separate entity and title from the main game.
It works on a different type of devices, it’s built in a different engine and every aspect of the game works differently as a result. That’s why it doesn’t make any sense for Respawn to mix these 2 pools of players.
What is Apex Legends?
Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale-hero shooter game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. Combining the hero shooter aspect of titles like Overwatch and Valorant into the highly popular battle royale scheme proven to work by PUB G, was a major breakthrough.
The title was released for the PlayStation 4, Windows, and the Xbox One in February 2019. It was later followed up with a Nintendo Switch release in March 2021, and a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S publishing in March 2022.
The mobile version of the game called Apex Legends Mobile was released in May 2022 for Android and iOS users. The game supports full cross platform compatibility, apart from the mobile version which acts as a stand-alone title for a different market.
Each multiplayer server can house up to 60 total players. These are either spread out into 20 three-person squads or 30 two-person duos. The contestants land on an island where they search for weapons and supplies before attempting to defeat all other players in combat.
In the Battle Royale mode, the goal is to be the last squad standing by any means necessary. Before the match, players choose from a wide array of pre-designed characters with distinctive abilities, known as “Legends”.
Creating a proper team composition in accordance with the map and level of play is also another skill aspect players must improve on. As time goes by and objectives change, the available play area on the island shrinks over time.
This forces players to keep moving in order to survive, competing with rival squads for resources and territory. If they find themselves outside the marked play area, they will take lethal damage.
Apex Legends Game Modes
In the “Arenas” game mode, players form 3 player squads and duke it out against other squads in a 3v3 team deathmatch over a series of rounds to determine the winner of the match. Teams win when their team has at least 3 points and is 2 points ahead.
Apex Legends is set in the same science fiction universe as Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall series. Initially when development began, many were anticipating the project to be a continuation of the series, not a new title.
Multiple characters from the Titanfall series also appear either as minor characters or playable Legends. Work on the game began around late 2016, though the project remained a secret right up until its launch. The game’s release in 2019 came as a surprise, but a few months later, the foundations of the esports scene were laid.
Apex Legends received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its gameplay, progression system, and fusion of elements from various genres. The gunplay and movement were much better than other battle royale titles at the time.
On top of this, the ping system was rather revolutionary, making communication a lot easier. And the audience loved every bit of it, as evidenced by the warm reception. Apex Legends surpassed 25 million players by the end of its first week, and 50 million within its first month.
Within the first month of its release, Apex Legends made $92 million in revenue across all platforms, the highest amount earned by any free-to-play game during its month of launch.
By April 2021, it had approximately 100 million players making it one of the most played video games of all time by player count.
